A Summer in Spain

This is a poster for the Junior end of year show for Auckland Academy of Dance.

I was largely inspired by cutout paper art, and the bright colours found in Spanish summer festivals. In the thumbnails down below you can see how I was playing around with the different ways you could execute a paper cutout style.

My client and I landed on 2 designs to develop further, the bottom 2 thumbnails. Once they were done it was a hard toss-up because I love the dimension from the layered frames but ultimately we decided to go with the erratic cutout shapes.

We found the cutout shapes matched the chaotic energy of a dance show with a bunch of kindergarteners and I could include references to the costumes they'd be wearing. Almost everything you see in the poster is a reference to a dance number in the show. Yes, there were dancing tomatoes.
