There’s No Place Like Home

A poster for the end of year senior show for Auckland Academy of Dance.

This show takes inspiration from The Wizard of Oz. I used the movie's highly iconic blue sock and ruby red slipper combo to drive that link across.

I didn’t want anything taking away from how iconic and recognisable that combo is so I used a clean 60s style aesthetic. The simplicity of it allows for the full impact of the colours to come through and the shift of the colour adds interest and gives it an implied shiny/sparkly effect.

I had explored a few different ideas in the beginning, playing with a homage to the original Wizard of Oz poster, using character silhouettes, and other nods to the movie. I found that a lot of my early concept sketches focused too much on the illustration rather than the title of the show.

It was important for the title of the show to have impact as it needs to be memorable. So when the audience go to google for tickets they actually type “There’s No Place Like Home”, rather than “The Wizard of Oz.”

Overall I think the design was successful. It was easy adapting it for the ticketing website and social media. As well as making a last minute t-shirt design which were made for the cast and crew, and for parents to purchase as well.
